9 Elements of Digital Citizenship


Mike Ribble defined Digital Citizenship as to regarding the use of technology by us of appropriate norms and responsible behavior.

There are 9 elements of digital citizenship and will be named as discussed below(in terms of (M. Ribble, 2011)):

       1. Digital Access:

·         Digital access is the full electronic in society.
·         Starting point of Digital Citizenship is to work for equal digital rights and help with/supporting electronic access.
·         Everyone does not have the same opportunities regarding technology.
·         Providing and expanding access to technology should be a goal of all digital citizens, because difficulty to grow as a society is caused by digital exclusion.

2           2.  Digital Commerce:
·         Digital commerce is where goods and/or services are bought or sold electronically.
·         Market economy is being largely done electronically.
·         In the new digital economy, the users of the electronic market economy need to learn how to become effective consumers.

              3. Digital Communication:
·        Digital Communication is where the exchange of information occurs electronically.
·        The communication with other people is one of the most significant changes regarding digital   revolution.
·        Anyone can communicate with anyone across the world over a variety of digital innovations   and applications.
·        When faced with different digital communication options, many of the users have not been   taught how to make appropriate or effective decisions.

              4. Digital Literacy:
·         Digital literacy encompasses the process of teaching and learning about technology and the use thereof.
·         New technologies are being invented and implemented into work places that are not being taught about at schools/colleges.
·         The persons, whom are involved with the education of Digital Citizenship, need a high degree of information literacy skills.

              5. Digital Etiquette:
·         Digital etiquette is the electronic standards which include the conduct or procedure of Digital Citizenship.
·         There are many inappropriate uses of technology.
·         People must become responsible digital citizenship.

              6. Digital Law:
·         Digital Law entails electronic responsibilities for the actions and deeds digital citizens.
·         Deals with the ethics of technology within a society.
·         Theft and/or crime is the form in which unethical use manifests itself.
·         Abiding by the laws of society is the form in which ethical use manifests itself.
·         These laws apply to anyone whom works or plays online.

               7. Digital Rights and Responsibilities:
·         Digital rights and responsibilities are the freedom which is attached to everyone whom is in the digital world.
·         For the rights which is extended to everyone, there are responsibilities which is extended to everyone as well.
·         How to use technology in an appropriate manner must be defined and further defined by the users thereof

               8. Digital Health and Wellness:
·         Digital health and wellness entail and describes the physical and psychological well-being in a digital technological world.
·         There are various issues that arise from the new world that need to be addressed, which are, Eye safety, repetitive stress syndrome, and sound ergonomic practices.
·         A culture which is included in the Digital Citizenship is that of how to protect oneself through educating and training.

               9. Digital Security:
·         Digital security pertains to self-protection through the use of electronic precautions.
·         People whom steal, deface, or disrupt other people are found in any society. This is also true in our digital community/society
·         You need to protect yourself digitally as you would your own home.
·         Digitally you can protect yourself by using virus protection, backups of data, and surge control of our equipment.
·         Digital citizens should protect their information of outside forces that are trying to cause harm or disruption.
