Question 1.2 Define and explain how digital citizen can build and enhance social capital.

            Digital citizen:
·         A digital citizen is a person whom uses information technology in order to get involved/engaged in society, politics, and participation in government.
·         Thus, a digital citizen is a person whom uses the Internet effectively, regularly, and appropriately.

            Social capital:
·         Social capital is defined by Better Together initiative as “the collective value of all social networks (who people know) and the inclinations that arise from these networks to do with things for each other (‘norms reciprocity’). The central premise of social capital is that networks have value. (Independent Institute of Education (Pty) Ltd, 2019)
·         A simple google search gave me the following analogy of social capital, social capital is the enabling of a society to function effectively through the networks of relationships throughout the people who live and work in that particular society.

Build and Enhance:
·         Build: This means to add on or create new.
·         Enhance: This means to better already existing stuff, for example, information, technology, relationships, etc.

How to build and enhance social capital:
·         In order for a digital citizen to have this impact of building and enhancing social capital, there are ways in which this would be possible.
·         Digital citizens can build on to social capital by way breaking down the digital divide, between digital citizens and those that are blocked to becoming a digital citizen, by helping and/or giving them the means and knowledge to those whom are blocked. Thus, building towards their digital citizenship.
·         Digital citizens can enhance the social capital by teaching and learning of what digital citizens already know and enhance this understanding that they have.
